The Access Certificate
in English Language Training

 

  • • Who is the qualification for?
    ACE has been designed as an initial teaching certificate for non-native speakers of English. This award is suitable for:
    1. existing English language teachers who need to upgrade their skills and qualifications
    2. teachers who want to move on into English language teaching
    3. newcomers to the teaching profession who wish to gain an initial English language teaching qualification.
    There are no formal entry requirements, but candidates are expected to be competent in English at Pitman Qualifications Higher Intermediate level or Council of Europe level C1.
  • • Is there any progression to further study?
    Successful candidates may apply for the Manchester University Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Language Teaching and will be given accredited prior learning for the ACE award .
  • • Experience - The Department of Language and Literacy Studies in Education at Manchester University offers a variety of teaching awards leading up to the Master of Arts degree in English Language Teaching. Together with City and Guilds Pitman Qualifications they have over 30 years experience of developing qualifications for the English Language market.
  • • International Recognition - The experience of the Department of Language and Literacy Studies in Education at Manchester University and the international recognition of City and Guilds Pitman Qualifications provide candidates with the opportunity of achieving a high quality qualification that will be recognised worldwide.   • • How will I be assessed?
    ACE consists of two modules. The first requires approximately 100 hours of study and the second 50 hours of study.

The first module is called Foundation of English Language Teaching (FELT) and is aimed at developing an understanding of English language teaching. It is assessed by a multiple choice examination paper consisting of 40 questions and lasting one hour. Candidates will need to achieve a pass mark of 65% to be successful in this part of the qualification.

Supervised Teaching Practice (STP * ) is the second module and is aimed at developing practical skills of English language teaching. The assessment is based on a portfolio of coursework and on an assessor's observation of the candidate's teaching practice – 4 lessons each for a minimum of 40 minutes.

Candidates must achieve a C grade in each of the sections.

* STP is assessed by the course tutor and moderated by the Visiting Verifier. The assessment is based on:
1) A portfolio of coursework produced by each candidate – a folder of lesson plans, observation sheets, student profiles and self-evaluation.
2) Four peers observed teaching practice sessions of 1 ½ hours each.
3) Two formally assessed teaching practice sessions of 1 ½ hours each.

Candidates must be successful in both sections of the module (FELT and STP) and must achieve a minimum C grade in each of the sections.

• What do the candidates learn in ACE?

In the FELT module, it is theoretical learning where the following areas would be covered:

Unit 1    :  Choices in the classroom
Unit 2    :  Learning about the language
Unit 3    :  Teaching the language systems
Unit 4    :  Teaching receptive skills
Unit 5    :  Teaching productive skills (speaking)
Unit 6    :  Teaching productive skills (writing)
Unit 7    :  Learner styles and learner training
Unit 8    :  Planning effective learning
Unit 9    :  Resources available to the teacher
Unit 10  :  Teaching versus testing

As for STP , the aim is to develop the practical skills of English Language Teaching and focus on the following areas:

•  Classroom management and procedures
•  Techniques and methods
•  Personal qualities
•  Assessment and monitoring
•  Use of language
• Who is the awarding body of ACE?
Upon successful completion of each module, a certificate will be awarded by City and Guilds Pitman Qualifications (UK). However in order to receive the full ACE award, candidates must be successful in both modules.
